Hibiscus Tea

Dallas got me this pretty Hibiscus plant for Valentines Day to add to the hibiscus planter on the side of the house. It was the first to bloom this month and recently I discovered that in addition to enjoying the beauty of flowers, you can also make hibicus tea from them!

I'm no expert, but this is my recipe, feel free to add a little more of this or that.
  • Three or four Hibiscus flowers.
  • Two cups boiling water.
  • Two tablespoons sugar.
  • The juice of one lime.

I grabbed three flowers. I would have used more if I had them but I didn't. I have also used double bloom hibiscus flowers in the past, which aren't customarily used for the the tea, but I did  it and the tea had the same hibiscus flavor and I'm still alive so...

Remove the stamens until you just have the petals and put them in something that you can pour boiling water into. I used my measuring cup which was perfect for two cups of hibicus tea!

Pour the boiling water over the top of the leaves and they immediately loose their color and the water turns a purplish greenish color.

Let the leaves sit for a couple minutes and then add about two tablespoons of sugar.

And the juice of a lime.

Its a fun little experiment with the kids because when you add the lime juice because the tea turns pink!

After letting it cool in the fridge, pour it over some ice in a Mason Jar, add a cute straw and serve it up!

I've also had it with mint which is a fun little add in.

Cheers with Grandma.

Enjoy!
